The Textures of India
THE TEXTURES OF INDIA
The collages in “The Textures of India” were inspired by the light, textiles, and design in India that has drawn Marsha to make a number of visits there since 2001. Initially, she did a series of collages called “Sarees” in 2003 based on some antique sarees in the Craft Museum in New Delhi. Because she had such a short time to take in all those beautiful sarees, she took photos even though they were behind glass. Working with the memories and using an actual photo in each work was a way to spend a longer time with them, to digest and enjoy them.
Recently Marsha went back to this series to finish some that she had started. She also was drawn to working with the color red. Shortly afterwards, she began expanding upon the original idea to include other hints of India.
The collages are made by combining or “weaving“ together various textures and colors of painted or monoprinted paper and xeroxing some of her photos and her salwar-kameezs onto transparencies.
